Problem

Our brief was a new diary for tracking addictive behaviour – one that had to work for two very different readers.

For the patient, simplicity was everything. In addiction treatment, the person filling in a diary is often exhausted and struggling to concentrate, and the diary can’t demand more than they can manage on a bad day. Make it complicated and it stays empty.

For the specialist, the same pages had to be quick to scan and useful in clinical practice.

On top of that, it had to work on paper and on screen, and cover the full range of addictive behaviours – digital, gambling, eating and substance use.

Solution

The diary holds to the Estonian Health Insurance Fund’s brand language while feeling warm and calm. Colour is used more playfully, the illustrations reassure rather than instruct, and the information design stays clear enough to follow on a difficult day.

It reads as a considered tool rather than a form to fill in – and mental health specialists have confirmed as much in their feedback.
